Thesis Deadlines

Completing a master’s thesis requires planning and attention to deadlines. You should work closely with your thesis committee and/or graduate advisor to meet your departmental deadlines for committee review and the defense of your thesis. A thesis should only be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research after you have applied for graduation and after all members of your thesis committee have approved your thesis. Information about applying for graduation, university deadlines, graduation requirements, and forms can be found on the Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations website.

There are two important deadlines to consider when submitting your thesis to Graduate Studies and Research:

1) Submitting your thesis for initial review, and

2) Submitting your thesis for binding.

Master’s theses are reviewed by Graduate Studies and Research for the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. You may submit your thesis up to one month in advance of the deadline. The scheduled deadlines for upcoming semesters are as follows:

Because deadlines are posted well in advance of each thesis cycle, extensions of the deadline are not granted. It is the responsibility of the author to ensure that the thesis is submitted on time to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, according to an acceptable format outlined in the SJSU Thesis Guidelines (pdf).

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

San Jose State University is in the process of transitioning to a paperless system for accepting the final version of SJSU master’s theses approved by the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. GS&R will continue to review a paper version of each thesis initially submitted by the posted deadline in order to determine whether each thesis meets University standards. The following changes apply to the last stage of the thesis review process:

As of Fall 2009, the MLK Library will no longer be processing three copies of the thesis for binding.  For Fall 2009 students are instructed to submit one paper copy of the final thesis after it has been approved by Graduate Studies and Research along with the forms and payments outlined on the thesis binding checklist. GS&R will forward the final copy to the library for binding.

In Spring 2010, the final version of the thesis approved by GS&R will be submitted electronically. Please check this website in late January 2010 for updated guidelines, forms, instructions, and a link to the electronic thesis administrator.

A bound paper version of the thesis will no longer be provided to departments. Full text versions of the thesis will be available through the external publisher, ProQuest, as well as through the MLK Library's online electronic repository.

It is important that students and faculty check this website each semester for the latest instructions and guidelines, as failure to submit the thesis as instructed may result in a delay in graduation.
